LISA KIRCHNER ARTIST STATEMENT

These are items from the "hand-sewn" world. Painting, colors, design and visual art have always been a delight and a passion for me. Here the process of revelation is pursued in the absence of judgement. Here I escape from the verbal world and embark on a wordlessly chronicled adventure on a sea of unnamed symbols. An inner fairy tale is enacted. Demons are faced and dragons wrestled silently while I float.

I design while listening to melodies, ruminating on lyrics, and observing pictures. All the designs are the end of a long process of layering, listening and imagining. I find one art form always supplies a port to regroup for another, without pressure so that one may come back with fresh ideas. So here you have the portals of imagination secured to boxes and supplying holding bins for new ideas.

PAUL KIRCHNER ARTIST STATEMENT

I would avoid claiming any general vision or philosophy underlying all of my artistic endeavors, for that will vary according to the particular project in which I'm engaged. In fact, the initial theme for a given work may seem to me somewhat mundane at the outset, but as the painting develops and compositional relationships are realized, an aesthetic imperative will emerge and result in an overriding aesthetic objective. But even at this point, some of the early ideas that were so enticing in theory can suddenly be exposed in sharp contrast with their imperfect, concrete manifestation. The challenge at this point is to devise an alternative strategy which may in fact supersede the previous plan and thus produce an unexpected transformation of the original purpose, even at odds with my fundamental sentiments but surely, in my revised judgment, the correct outcome for the painting. I enjoy working from life, imagination and memory, as expressed through my drawings. I also enjoy the old-fashioned Renaissance methods for enlarging and transferring works. I suppose the only consistent aspect is a highly structured or well-defined composition at the beginning of a project, which may survive intact or, like the sandcastle at the beach, be broken down through the process of translation. I would hope never to be restricted to any one philosophical, socio-political or aesthetic school.
